TORONTO — Noa Mendelsohn Aviv, Executive Director and General Counsel of the Canadian Civil Liberties Association, made the following statement today following the repeal of Bill 28:

Today, the Government of Ontario repealed Bill 28. This act should never have been introduced and was an affront to the rights and freedoms of every person in Canada.

The Premier of Ontario must commit today – publicly and in writing, to never invoke the notwithstanding clause again.

Every provincial, territorial, and federal government must understand: the Charter represents our aspiration for a free and just society – and we will fight to protect it.
