On June 10, 2024, Anaïs Bussières McNicoll, Director of the Fundamental Freedoms Program, and Shakir Rahim, Director of the Criminal Justice Program, testified before the Senate Standing Senate Committee on National Security, Defence and Veterans Affairs (SECD) in their study of Bill C-70, An Act respecting countering foreign interference.

The CCLA acknowledged the importance of addressing foreign interference, but highlighted the rushed process to pass Bill C-70, the risk that overbroad new offences will undermine Charter rights like freedom of expression, and the dangers involved with leaving crucial powers contained within the Act to be determined by future regulations.
