Founded in 1964, CCLA has worked diligently for six decades to challenge individual and collective violations of civil liberties, rights and freedoms and to work for more justice for all people in Canada. Leaving a gift to CCLA in your will is easy and could be one of the most significant and lasting contributions you can make toward a better future for everyone in Canada.

Throughout CCLA’s history, legacies have provided the vital funding needed to ensure we have the resources to go to court to challenge violations of people’s rights and to work at many levels to change unfair laws and practices.

It’s easy to do

The two most common ways of leaving a donation to charity in your will are by naming a specific gift amount or leaving a percentage of the residue of your estate once all the taxes, administrative fees and gifts to friends and family have been paid.
Here is sample wording you can use for each of these two types of donation:

Our legal name is the Canadian Civil Liberties Association, and our charitable registration number is #75480 2288 RR0001.
You can also leave a legacy to our sister organization which runs innovative rights education programs in schools and the community: the Canadian Civil Liberties Education Trust, charitable registration # 10684 4384 RR0001.

It’s a good idea to get legal advice

If you already have a will and would like to leave a gift to CCLA, there is no need to rewrite your will. All you need is a simple addition called a codicil. A codicil is a testamentary document that amends your will and allows you to make a change while leaving the rest of the provisions as they are.

If you do not have a will, deciding to make a legacy gift to CCLA is a good opportunity to contact a lawyer and start the process. Whether you are preparing a new will or a codicil, we advise you to discuss your wishes and intentions with an estate and trust lawyer to ensure that your wishes will be carried out properly through your will.
